Keeping it NATURAL
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) is a synthetic (man-made) hormone (recombinant bovine somatotropin or rBST) that is marketed to dairy farmers to increase milk production in cows.
It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1993.

"Inconclusive" - So Why Even Risk It?
According to cancer.org, the available evidence shows that the use of rBGH can cause adverse health effects in cows.
The evidence for potential harm to humans is inconclusive. It is not clear that drinking milk produced using rBGH significantly increases IGF-1 levels in humans or adds to the risk of developing cancer.
More research is needed to help better address these concerns.

Dairy Families, Not Cow Factories
The dairy where our ice cream is produced buys the milk from farms that have pledged not to use rBST on their cows and are inspected regularly for compliance.
As a matter of fact, the milk and cream for Monarca Michoacana ice cream comes from dairy farms owned and operated by families - in many cases, generations - that treat their cows humanely, not as factory machinery.
We would not associate ourselves with any facility that was using rBGH or not following these guidelines.
